Inspiration in White: Painted Floors

I like the idea of painted floors. I reeeally like the idea of white painted floors. I have always said an all white home, floor to ceiling white, is superb.....I also think the idea of stenciling a floor can be beautiful in the right space. Doing the painting yourself does not look that tough but then I have never done it so I could be wrong. I have read about it on many DIY blogs and they are all very optimistic about doing it. Some of the rules of floor painting from Elle Decor are:

• scarify the surface with 150-grit sandpaper
• wash the floor with a powdered detergent cleaner to remove all dust and deposits
• allow floor to dry completely (this may take a couple of days)
• apply a primer suitable for your paint type
• allow primer to dry overnight
• lightly sand primer with 220-grit sandpaper
• wipe floor clean with mineral spirits, using tack cloth or a rag
• apply the first, thin coat of paint with a natural-bristle brush (which creates a smooth finish, rather than with a roller, which creates a stippled finish)
• allow paint to dry 24 hours
• apply two more thin coasts, allowing 24 hours between each

I like some of these painted floors but would I be brave enough to actually try it? I think so. What about you?

1. Painted or whitewashed

2. Painting a pattern or stencil

Here is just one of many resources for stenciling your floorshttp://www.royaldesignstudio.com/blogs/stencil-ideas/7210634-a-sweetly-stenciled-floor-at-sweet-south-cottage

Interiors with Ikea Live

I think we have all had a little Ikea in our home at one time or another. I still have Ikea white couches in my family room downstairs and have painted and repainted an old Ikea dining room table (that I cut down to make a coffee table) over and over again. I really appreciate the simplicity of the designs and often go to look at the site Ikea Family Live to see the new ways people are incorporating Ikea into their homes.

Below Monica has used Ikea throughout her home in Tucca Italy, to create a beautiful, easy space for herself and her two daughters. Using white allows her to mix different styles and materials and yet still maintain a unified space. She feels that white is neutral, light and stress free as well as being very practical and I could not agree more! Take a look at her pretty home here..

Enjoy!

In the Details..

This is the home of Annabelle Kerslake who is the editor of the on-line magazine Fete. A wonderful open plan space offsetting dark furniture with white and cream. I love the Victorian letter holder that has a card from a photo shoot for the magazine as well as the silver stag head. A bird decal on the wall above vintage books is another of the cool fun elements in this home. The bedroom of Annabelle's daughter is especially cute with the white and pink striped tent over the bed and the ruffled bed cover makes this space perfect for any little girl.

So many beautiful details in this home and I think that is what makes any home so different and special...

Enjoy!

Inspiration in White: Red and White Linen

So much to love about red and white linens. They feel typically French and many of the grain sack pillows, hand towels and table runners we are seeing are made with these incredibly durable linen and hemp materials from France, Belgium and Germany. I especially love the linens that have initials embroidered onto the piece. Some of these linens are up to a 100 years old so it makes you wonder about the original family that took the time to stitch their grain sacks.

I am starting a collection of antique linens that I think could be a bit dangerous as once you buy a few pieces you can not resist looking for more. I have added the cushions below to my shop and have also added a wonderful table runner in red and an oatmeal colour.  Also have a gorgeous vintage chair upholstered in a red and white hemp grain sack. Just beautiful!

Cushions available in my shop made from Antique French Grain sack.

Love this bag made from linen..

Pretty embroidered frabric on this settee.

Vintage chair covered in red and white grain sack. This one is in the shop!

This is such a great idea from Dreamy Whites! What a nice way to bring a gift of a bottle of wine to your hostess.

This is the table runner and Grain Sack cushion available in the shop! Love how it looks against the white settee!

Enjoy!

Inspiration in White - Candles

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...

I love candles and have many glowing around the house daily. I prefer floral fragrances but in winter I tend to go with a more woody scent. I love mercury glass containers but what I am really looking for is simplicity in the look of the candle. Here are a few ideas for you to buy as gifts (these are so cool because you can personalize them or find one for Valentine's Day that is just around the corner) or for setting a mood at home...

These are Tina K candles....so pretty.

Have you seen these gorgeous Izola candles?

Superb Tom Dixon candles in brass, silver and copper .

Tea candles from Martha Stewart that you can make yourself.

And of course lovely Mercury Glass candles from lookslikewhite shop. These smell so good!

Love Tocca Candles. Very feminine in look and in the fragrance.

Enjoy!

Inspiration in White - Baskets

There are so many ways to use beautiful and interesting shaped baskets around the house. I just got some new Market Baskets in the shop and I just love all of the different ways you can use them or any basket for that matter. Great for firewood, pillows and extra throws, flowers or for really going to the market (much nicer looking than another recycled bag!). Take a look at some of the inspirations for how to use baskets in your home and go check out the new market baskets at the shop (basket below is in the shop)!

Inspiration in White Goes Pink!

With Valentine's Day around the corner I thought Inspiration in White this week should go PINK! I do love pale pink and it is of course a Shabby Chic favourite but I can not say I have any in my home....none, not one thing... which is too bad because there are so many great ways to use pink and to add that little bit of femininity to any space. Check it out..

Interiors: Layers of Grey and White

Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...

I have posted about my love for grey before but it is a love affair that continues so I need to share again....grey is not only perfect in the home but I love to wear grey as well. I have so many grey sweaters that my closet looks frankly ridiculous. (does anyone need that many grey sweaters). Grey, black, beige and white....pretty much like my decor. I love the depth of grey and how mixing different greys can look in a room. It is like white in the way that layers of different whites in a room can have so much impact. Take a look at a few spaces layered in grey and a few grey outfits as well....

 Enjoy!

Neutral Territory from Lonny Magazine

This month Lonny has a wonderful spread on the home of antique dealer Kaye O Toole. Each day as I look at all of the beautiful white homes I put on my blog I am constantly reminded of why I love white decor so much and this home does it again. It is very neutral in tone but it is the combination of many whites, creams, greys and pale blues that gives it such warmth and texture. The furniture and accessories throughout the home are just exquisite and unusual, collected over time. Kaye lives steps away from her antique store which I will show a bit of tomorrow. I love her kitchen with the white jars on the island and her bedroom with the incredible canopy bed looks so romantic and comfortable. Just a lovely, inspiring home..

Enjoy!
