Interiors: Home of Angelika Taschen

Every time I was in Paris over the last couple of years I would make a stop at the book store Taschen. I loved to look around at all of the art and photography books that they publish. The store has this vibe, very artsy and yet sophisticated and sexy....much like the apartment of the owner Angelika Taschen. This apartment is in Berlin and she says the new way to decorate in her city is to make the best space with very little money...and I think her apartment reflects her philosophy. She has not got a lot of pieces but they are meaningful to her and are all rather artsy and sophisticated..like her store. Most surprising is the kitchen with just one wall of counters and her table and a lamp. On the other wall is a gorgeous mirror, not really what you would expect to see in a kitchen but that is what makes it so great...Take a look.

Enjoy!

Interiors: Gorgeous Design

When you have incredible architecture with tall windows and beautiful moldings you could add just about anything to a room and it would look good...but when you add wonderful lighting and the most sophisticated furnishings it really becomes spectacular! Such a gorgeous room with a wonderful kitchen and dining room. Love the mesh Eames chairs and dark wood in the kitchen.....and yes I would love to have that closet please!! It looks so cool to have the single bulb in the kitchen which is such a contrast to the rest of the room. Love it...

 Enjoy!

Loft in Barcelona

A former carpet store turned gorgeous loft located in Barcelona has nice style and a certain cool. Great space kept simple but with fun design. Look at that amazing ceiling and the huge windows! Super lighting also with the mix of large floor lamps and ceiling fixtures. Big furniture pieces are really what is required here and the mix seems perfect to me. Nice bedroom and eat in kitchen make this loft space so great. What do you think? Could you live in a loft?

Enjoy!

Sophisticated & Contemporary Space

This timeless and contemporary space has been designed by Sydney architect Tania Handelsmann. Featured this month in Est Magazine, her gorgeous esthetic is on display in this simple grey, white and wood (which you know is one of my favourite combos) home. Love the simplicity of this space with the palest of colour everywhere and the smallest hint of pale blue and smoky purple. The kitchen is the space I like the best though...she keeps it very minimal but not cold with warm wood and modern accessories...Check out these other homes from Est..Here and here...

Enjoy!

Inspiration in White: ABC Carpet and Home

I have been lucky enough to visit New York for work at least twice a year for the past 25 years. Part of my job during these visits was to go to stores and see what was new and exciting in the world of retail and to get inspired. Well there has never been a store that inspired me more than ABC Carpet and Home.

The history of this store is this...in 1897 Sam Weinrib starting selling carpets on the streets of Manhattan. His son Max then took the business and opened a permanent location as a discount carpet store. Keeping it in the family, Max's son then took over and moved it to its current location on Broadway and 19th in 1961. It grew over the years and a home store was opened up across the street.

Paulette Cole, a fourth generation family member, is the current CEO and Creative Director and she has really taken the store to a whole other level. She says the store is not about home furnishings but about loving... and with her creative team they travel the world to bring an incredible mix of furnishings (shabby chic to modern), carpets and home wares to this meca of home shopping. Many of the pieces are antiques or handcrafted by artisans around the world. Their saying is "Collect, don't decorate". I love that!

When I go in this store it's really an experience, not just in shopping, but for all of the senses. You can feel they have a passion, not only for beautiful pieces, but for the environment, health and wellbeing. Deepak Chopra host talks in the store, the restaurant ABC Kitchen has all organic ingredients and the store is committed to carrying eco products. But really at the end of the day they just have the most beautiful products that are incredibly well presented that make you dream....and really isn't that what you hope a store will make you do?

I love to see the kind of commitment they have to their customers, to their suppliers and to the environment. Well done ABC!!

(My daughter was in the store this past weekend and took these photos..)

Enjoy!

Feminine Touch

As I was doing some research yesterday I stumbled on the home of the designer Carolyne Quatermain and I am so happy I did. I spent at least an hour going through her website and looking at each of the articles written on this incredible designer. She really has the most refined eye! This woman designs homes, businesses, crystal, fabric...really versatile.

Her home in France is so feminine and so sophisticated but not overdone. She uses all white surfaces and then pops it with color in such a brilliant way. It is a mix of modern textures and patterns with classic shapes. Of course I love all the chandeliers and the prints on the chairs are beautifully designed.....but that painting in the living room leaning beside the couch....be still my heart.

Enjoy!

Interiors: Great Design

I was doing my usual read of one of my favourite blogs, Decor 8, and I happened to see a photo that led me to the website of Piet-Jan van den Kommer who is a wonderful designer of furniture and interiors in the Netherlands. I simply adore the work I see in his photos. Very simple designs made with wonderful materials like concrete, steel, stone and leather, that together create such beauty...wow really...look at how the materials are mixed in this design.. and I especially love the bathroom vanity. So much space and the counter is just beautiful...well done!

Here are a couple of other designers that are wonderful to follow..ONE and TWO..

Enjoy!

Modern and Simple

Gorgeous modern home that keeps it really simple and clean. This place really sticks to the essentials with no fluff at all. The square lines throughout the apartment are broken with the three round fixtures above the dining room table....so cool....as well as the round tables in the living room. It is really clever how view is shown to its best advantage with furniture placement and the use of warm woods throughout this home keep it from getting too sterile! I do think a little art on the walls would add to the space but I still really like the simple beauty of this space...Here a couple of other modern spaces you might like HERE and HERE..

Enjoy!

Interiors: Lovely for Rent

I often look at homes on sites that are either selling properties or renting different homes for photography. There are so many creative beautiful homes on these sites and the spaces are often light filled with wide open rooms. I have seen some homes decorated in two or three different ways for different photo shoots and they look so original each time and the home takes on the feeling of the brand or product that is being shot in the home.

One of the sites I like is Light Locations. There are so many beautiful homes on this site and the decor is often simple and clean like this home below. What a perfect base to build on with lovely furnishings and of course there is the gorgeous architecture. Check that amazing mirror in the living room and the pale chevron floor in the kitchen..really beautiful! Here are One and Two more homes from Light Locations.

Enjoy!

Beautiful in Brooklyn

I first saw this home in the book Decorate by the wonderful blogger Holly Becker and I could not stop looking at it over and over. It provided me with some great inspiration for a project I have been working on for the past few months. So while visiting the site The Selby today I ran across this  house once again and decided I had to share it with you! (I love the The Selby by the way. Homes of all sorts of wonderful creative people!)

This is the home of Lyndsay Caleo and Fitzhugh Karol who are interior designers and artists. What I am so inspired by is the way the home works as a whole.....how it feels entirely seamless with one room flowing beautifully into the next. The rooms have a natural, sort of artsy vibe while still being very sophisticated. The kitchen is just perfect for me..open shelving, big farmhouse sink yet it feels modern with the countertops and stainless steel. Oh yes this is really such a great space!

Enjoy!
